A Concrete Driveway That Holds Up to Barrie Winters

Built tough. Poured right. Made to last for years in Barrie, Ontario.

Winters in Barrie are hard on driveways. Snow, ice, road salt, and freeze-thaw cycles can crack and crumble a poorly built surface in just a few years. That’s why the mix you use and the ground prep underneath both matter a lot. At Barrie Concrete, we do the job right from the start. This means your driveway stays smooth and solid — even after the worst Ontario winters.

What Goes Into Every Driveway We Pour

A good driveway starts long before the concrete truck shows up. Here is what we do on every job.

The Right Concrete Mix

We use a 4000 PSI concrete mix with 5% to 8% air inside it. That trapped air gives the slab room to breathe when temperatures drop. Water freezes and expands — and without that space, it cracks the surface. Our mix stops that from happening.

A Solid Base Underneath

Soft or wet ground will cause a slab to shift and sink. So before we pour, we dig down and pack at least 6 inches of granular gravel under the slab. This keeps water draining away and stops the ground from moving under your driveway.

Steel and Mesh Inside the Slab

We run steel rebar through every driveway we build. We also add fiber mesh to the mix. Together, these hold the slab together under heavy loads. Your car, your truck, your delivery van — none of it will cause the slab to split apart.

A Protective Coat on Top

After the slab cures, we apply a siloxane sealer to the surface. It soaks into the concrete and blocks road salt and moisture from getting in. Before we pour, we also check the ground using a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (ASTM D6951). This tool tells us exactly how compact the Granular 'A' sub-base aggregate layers are. This step makes sure we meet the subgrade bearing capacity requirements set out in OBC Table 9.15.3.4.

Pick the Finish That Fits Your Home

Not every driveway looks the same. We offer four surface options. Each one works well — but they look and feel different. Here is a quick breakdown.

Broom-Finish Concrete

This is the most common choice. The surface is brushed with a broom while the concrete is still wet. That gives it a slightly rough texture. It’s slip-resistant in rain and snow, and it’s easy to maintain over time.

Stamped Concrete

This finish looks like stone, slate, or brick — but it’s all concrete. We press a pattern into the wet slab to create the look. Also, we add color to match your home’s exterior. It costs less than real stone and lasts just as long.

Exposed Aggregate

This finish shows the small stones and pebbles inside the concrete. We wash away the top layer while the slab sets, which exposes the natural stone underneath. Next, the result is a textured surface that grips well and hides tire marks.

Decorative Borders

You can add a colored or patterned border around the edge of your driveway. This gives it a clean, finished look. For bordered driveways, we press the pattern using heavy-duty polyurethane texture imprinting mats while the concrete is still setting. Also, we use a CSA A23.1 C-2 exposure class concrete mix for all decorative pours. This mix meets the Ontario Building Code Section 9.3 requirements for air-entrainment and cement strength in freeze-thaw conditions.

Not Enough Parking Space? We Can Fix That.

In Barrie, overnight street parking is not allowed from December 1 to April 15. That rule is in place so snow plows can do their job. But it also means you need enough space in your driveway to fit every car in your household.

Many homeowners find out too late that their single-lane driveway is too small. We can widen it. We can add a second lane or a side pad for an extra vehicle, RV, or trailer. Before any digging starts, our team uses a GNSS RTK GPS receiver rover to map your property lines. This tool gives us exact measurements so we place the fiber-mesh reinforced concrete slab exactly where it belongs. We also make sure the layout follows the City of Barrie Comprehensive Zoning By-law 2009-141 Section 5.2.4 rules on parking setbacks and front yard landscaping limits.

Cracks, Sinking Slabs, and Shifting Panels — We Fix All of It.

Over time, even a well-built driveway can develop problems. Soil shifts. Slabs sink. Cracks open up. The good news is that most driveway problems can be fixed without tearing everything out.

How a Driveway Project Works — Start to Finish

Most homeowners don’t know what to expect before a driveway job starts. Here is exactly what happens from the first call to the day we leave your property.

Step 1 - Free Estimate

We check the slope, the soil, and the size in person to give you a clear written quote with no hidden fees.

Step 2 - Permit & Layout

We verify zoning rules and setbacks, then plan the layout to follow all City of Barrie guidelines.

Step 3 - Excavation

We break up and haul away the old driveway, excavating and grading for proper drainage.

Step 4 - Base Prep

We spread and compact layers of Granular 'A' gravel to prevent your new driveway from sinking or cracking.

Step 5 - Forming & Steel

We set up forms and lay down rebar steel, adding fiber mesh to the concrete mix for extra strength.

Step 6 - Concrete Pour

The concrete truck arrives and we pour in one continuous pass, leveling and tooling the edges.

Step 7 - Curing & Sealing

We allow the concrete to cure properly and apply a penetrating siloxane sealer to block road salt and moisture.

Step 8 - Site Cleanup

We clean up the job site completely and perform a final walkthrough to answer all your questions.

Straight Answers to Common Questions

Barrie gets a lot of freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Water gets into the concrete, freezes, and expands. That pressure breaks the slab from the inside. Also, road salt from your car drips onto the surface and eats away at it over time. A properly mixed slab with a solid gravel base handles this pressure much better than a cheap pour.

Wait at least 7 days before parking a regular car on it. For heavy trucks, trailers, or delivery vehicles, wait the full 28 days. Concrete keeps hardening long after it looks dry. Driving on it too soon can cause edge cracking or surface marks that are hard to fix.

A well-built concrete driveway in Barrie can last 30 years or more. The key is using the right concrete mix, a properly compacted base, and a quality sealer. Driveways that fail early usually have one of those three things missing. We don't cut corners on any of them.

Don't put rock salt or chemical de-icers on fresh concrete — especially not in the first year. The concrete is still curing and absorbs damage easily. Use sand for grip instead. Next, once the driveway is fully cured, have a siloxane sealer applied. Reapply it every 2 to 3 years to keep salt and moisture out.

A broom finish works best for slopes. The brushed texture gives tires and boots something to grip in wet or icy conditions. Smooth finishes look nice but get slippery fast when wet. If you want a decorative look on a slope, we can add a light broom pass over a stamped pattern to keep both grip and style.

Yes. Sinking is usually caused by soft or washed-out soil underneath the slab. We pump high-density polyurethane foam under the sunken section. The foam fills the void and lifts the slab back to level. This takes a few hours and costs much less than removing and replacing the whole slab.

In most cases, yes. The City of Barrie's Zoning By-law limits how much of your front yard can be covered by hard surfaces. There are also rules about keeping a strip of landscaping along the side of the driveway. Our team checks the rules for your property first. We also help make sure the layout meets all City of Barrie requirements before we start digging.

Prices vary based on the size of the driveway, the finish you choose, and the condition of the ground underneath. A standard broom-finish driveway costs less than a stamped or exposed aggregate finish. Repairs like crack sealing or slab lifting cost much less than a full replacement. The best way to get an accurate number is to book a free on-site estimate. We measure the space and give you a clear quote before any work begins.
